HAM RADIO CLUB

Meeting Notes

Notes:
This was the first meeting for the club for the fall semester. Attendance was about 18 people. The club began by introducing attendees at the direction of the vice president. For the purposes of this meeting attendees were considered members or secondary members.

The radio experience of the members ranged from people who did not have licenses but were interested in getting them, to people with licenses but no air experience, and people with licenses and experience in HF and UHF radio frequencies. 2 member’s project devices were passed around – one a class D audio amplifier, and the other a compact 3-4 watt HF radio transmitter inside an altoids tin.

Some possible club goals were tentatively discussed. These included updating the Ham Radio Club’s meeting room and repairing/replacing equipment, discussions to gauge interest in club contesting, and discussions on how the radio club might support the UI RISE – VAST Balloon Project since many members of the Ham Radio Club are involved in the balloon project.

It was brought up that W7UQ usually holds a net. It was explained to new members that a net helps stations practice identifying on the air. After discussion, 2 net days were found to be optimal, and a time was decided on.

Digital modes were discussed in relation to the VAST Balloon Project. Discussion centered on the use of APRS.

Elections for officer’s positions were held. Voting was done by hand.
